Storm Sarika to make landfall in Quang Ninh

Storm Sarika is expected to enter the northern provinces of Quang Ninh and Lang Son this afternoon, October 19, with winds from 90km-100 km per hour, according to the National Forecast Hydrometeorological Forecast Centre.
This is the seventh storm to hit Vietnam this year.
The storm is forecast to bring strong winds and heavy rain of 200-300mm for some areas in Quang Ninh, Hai Phong and Lang Son today, said the centre.

The rains could bring floods to these localities and mountainous areas are warned of flash floods and landslides.
Although the storm is forecast to land in at 4pm, some coastal localities including Bach Long Vi, Co To, and Van Don islands have been seeing strong winds and sea waves up to three to five metres since yesterday night.
In a meeting with local authorities in Hai Phong and Quang Ninh provinces yesterday afternoon, Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung have requested them to carefully check and repairs dykes and coal mines, urgently recall boats from the sea and evacuate fishermen and residents in low-lying areas.
Schools in Hai Phong and Quang Ninh provinces will close today.

After landing in Quang Ninh and Lang Son, Storm Sarika is forecast to reduce strength to a low pressure.
On Tuesday Storm Sarika lashed China's southern resort island of Hainan with torrential rain and winds of up to 162 kilometres per hour forcing authorities to evacuate almost half a million people and halt transport services.
Rail services were suspended on Monday and 250 flights were cancelled at the provincial capital Haikou's international airport, Xinhua said.

Storm Haima has been forming off the Philippines and is predicted to enter the East Sea in the next few days.
