Many citizens in Hanoi have used a variety of objects to block the road leading to Noi Bai International Airport to appeal for the construction of a flyover, causing traffic congestion this week.
Hundreds of residents began placing bricks, tires, bicycles, and motorbikesacross a section of Vo Van Kiet Street in Dong Anh District, Hanoi, to prevent vehicles from traveling between Noi Bai International Airport and the downtown area during Tuesday morning’s rush hour.
The incident caused severe traffic gridlocks as long lines of cars, buses, and trucks had to halt their commute and wait for the road to be cleared.
According to some local residents, they barricaded the street to demand that a flyover be constructed.
The section of the road has been considered a ‘traffic black spot’ where accidents often happen, affecting the lives of city dwellers.

Traffic police were later dispatched to the scene, along with representatives of local authorities, to clear the street and invite the protestors to attend a meeting at the local administration headquarters.
Traffic was back to normal at noon the same day.
According to Nguyen Tien Duong, vice-chairman of the People’s Committee in Dong Anh District, the citizens were asked not to repeat the incident as their petition would be submitted to higher authorities.
A project to construct a flyover on Vo Van Kiet Street was initiated six years ago, Vice-Chairman Duong was quoted by VnExpress as saying.
Duong added that it has not been carried out ever since.
Many requests have been made to expedite the process, the official continued.
